Prambanan's temple compounds: the Trimurti temples, Sewu and what one ticket covers

Prambanan is not one temple but a park holding the Hindu Trimurti compound and the Buddhist complex of Candi Sewu, with Bubrah and Lumbung. This guide explains what each is, how the operator says its Prambanan ticket covers them, the Monday rule its Sewu article mentions, and where official pages disagree on which province and regency the temples are in.

Quick answer

The Prambanan park holds the Hindu compound dedicated to the Trimurti, with the 47-metre Shiva temple and the Brahma and Vishnu temples in its inner court, and, about 800 metres to the north by the operator's figure, the Buddhist complex of Candi Sewu. According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket site, one Candi Prambanan ticket covers Prambanan, Lumbung, Bubrah, Sewu and the Prambanan Museum. According to InJourney Destination Management's article on Candi Sewu, dated 6 October 2026, the three main temples close for maintenance on Mondays while Sewu can still be visited. Official pages place the temples either in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (the operator's address says Sleman regency) or in Klaten, Central Java; none of them places Prambanan in Yogyakarta city.

The short answer

Prambanan is a park of temples, not a single building, and the ticket reflects that. The operator's ticket site says one Candi Prambanan ticket gives access to Candi Prambanan, Candi Lumbung, Candi Bubrah, Candi Sewu and the Prambanan Museum.[3] The Hindu Trimurti compound is the part most photographs show; Candi Sewu, about 800 metres to the north by the operator's figure, is a Buddhist complex in the same area.[4]

The whole park is run by InJourney Destination Management, the state company that also runs Borobudur and Ratu Boko, whose head office is on the Yogya-Solo road at Prambanan, Sleman.[1] Prambanan is outside Yogyakarta city; the next section explains why its province is less simple than it looks.

Where it is, and a provincial border

Official pages do not put Prambanan on the same side of the border between the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java. The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, reporting the 2022 worship designation, places "Candi Prambanan di Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta", in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and Borobudur, Pawon and Mendut in Central Java.[9] The operator's Sewu article gives the address of Prambanan and Sewu as Kecamatan Prambanan, Kabupaten Sleman, also in the Special Region.[4] But the operator's report on Waisak 2026 places Candi Sewu in Kabupaten Klaten, Central Java,[7] and its venue pages for the Shiva Mandala field and Sewu Temple Park give their location as "Prambanan, Klaten".[5]

XTOUR has not tested any temple's position against an administrative boundary, so it does not say which temple is in which regency. It does treat Yogyakarta as a base for Prambanan, not as the place that contains it.

The Trimurti compound

The operator's history page dates the main compound to the mid-9th century and the Sanjaya dynasty of the Hindu Mataram kingdom, and says it is dedicated to the Trimurti, with Shiva as the principal deity.[2] Its main page adds a caveat: the exact date and builder are unknown, and experts believe it was founded in the mid-9th century by King Balitung Maha Sambu of the Sanjaya dynasty.[1] XTOUR has not read an archaeological source on the attribution and repeats it only as the operator's.

The operator describes three courtyards in a hierarchy of sanctity:[1]

  • Jaba, the outer yard, the largest area, once a transitional space for pilgrims, with few standing structures.[1]
  • The central courtyard, once filled with hundreds of ancillary temples in rows, many now in ruins.[1]
  • Njeron, the inner court, the most sacred zone, holding the Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu temples.[1]

The Shiva temple stands 47 metres tall and is the main building of the complex, according to the operator's history page, which also says what each main temple holds: statues of the Lokapala, guardians of the directions, in the Shiva temple; statues of the brahmins who wrote the Vedas in the Brahma temple; and a statue of Vishnu flanked by two apsaras in the Vishnu temple.[2] The operator's venue page for the Shiva Mandala field calls the main temple by its popular name, Roro Jonggrang.[5]

The panels on the temple bodies carry the Ramayana.[2] The same story is performed as a dance-drama near the temple, which has its own guide: the Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan.

Prambanan is also a designated place of Hindu worship. According to the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, the government designated it a place of worship for Hindus of Indonesia and the world, marked by a memorandum signed on 11 February 2022 by four ministries and the two provincial governments, so that its functions include ritual and spiritual purposes alongside culture, tourism and research.[9]

Candi Sewu, Bubrah and Lumbung

The operator gives Sewu a long article of its own. It says Sewu stands about 800 metres north of Prambanan, a figure for position rather than a route, and that the operator provides bicycles and several kinds of electric vehicle for getting around the area.[4]

Sewu is older than the Trimurti compound by the operator's account: 8th century, against the 9th for Prambanan, founded late in the reign of Rakai Panangkaran and continued by Rakai Panaraban, according to the Kelurak inscription of 782 and the Manjusrigrha inscription of 792. The Manjusrigrha inscription gives its original name, Prasada Vajrasana Manjusrigrha; the article explains the last word as the house of Manjusri, a Bodhisattva. The article says experts believe it was later restored and enlarged under Rakai Pikatan.[4]

The name means "a thousand", but the operator counts 249 buildings: one main temple, eight apit temples and 240 perwara temples, with eight Dwarapala guardian statues, two at each entrance. It describes the plan as a vajradhatu mandala, the main temple standing for Mount Meru, and says Candi Bubrah, to the south, is one of four outlying temples that complete the cosmology. The operator calls Sewu the second-largest Buddhist temple complex after Borobudur.[4]

The article gives Sewu's modern history: found in 1733 by the Dutch trader Cornelius Antonie Lons, restored by the Indonesian government from 1981 to 1993, and damaged again by the 2006 earthquake and Merapi eruption.[4] On Lumbung, the pages XTOUR read give no more than its name and its place on the ticket.[3]

What the operator says about visiting

The ticket site lists the Prambanan ticket as daily, with a start time and no closing time.[3] The Sewu article adds a rule the ticket page does not mention: on Mondays the area of the three main temples, the Trimurti complex, is closed for maintenance, and visitors can still explore Sewu.[4] XTOUR does not know whether that applies every Monday or how much of the inner court it covers.

The operator also sells a Ratu Boko-Prambanan combination ticket with a free shuttle, which its Ratu Boko article says can be bought only offline, at the counter.[8] Ratu Boko is a separate site on a hilltop south of Prambanan, according to the operator;[10] see Ratu Boko: the palace site above Prambanan.

The Sewu article notes that Sewu is part of the Prambanan Temple Compounds, inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on 13 December 1991.[4]

What XTOUR does not know

XTOUR does not know closing times, current prices for domestic or foreign visitors, whether the shrines of the main temples can be entered, what is on show in the Prambanan Museum, accessibility for wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility, or where the boundary between Sleman and Klaten runs in relation to the temples. None of the pages read on 11 October 2026 settles these. XTOUR does not sell Prambanan tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Is Prambanan the same as the Ramayana Ballet venue?

They are next to each other but sold separately. According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket site, the Ramayana Ballet Prambanan has its own ticket page, and its open-air stage stands west of Prambanan Temple according to the operator's venue page.

Is Prambanan a place of worship?

Yes, by government designation. According to the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, the government designated Candi Prambanan a place of worship for Hindus of Indonesia and the world, alongside Borobudur, Mendut and Pawon for Buddhists, marked by a memorandum signed on 11 February 2022 by four ministries and the provincial governments of Yogyakarta and Central Java. The ministry says the temples had until then been used mostly for culture, tourism and historical research.
