The Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan: stages, seasons and the operator's own schedule

The Ramayana Ballet is a wordless Javanese dance-drama performed beside Prambanan since 1961, on an open-air stage in one part of the year and an indoor theatre in the other. This guide sets out what the operator's pages say about the show, which stage runs when, the rain and seating rules, and the gap in the published schedule after October 2026.

Quick answer

The Ramayana Ballet Prambanan (Sendratari Ramayana) is a dance-drama without dialogue, set to gamelan, telling how Rama rescues Sita from Rahwana; its operator, InJourney Destination Management, says it has been staged since 1961. According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket page, the 2026 schedule put the Ramayana on the open-air stage on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from May to October 2026 and in the indoor Trimurti building from November 2025 to April 2026, with a separate Roro Jonggrang dance-drama on Fridays. That page, read on 11 October 2026, published nothing after October 2026.

The short answer

The Ramayana Ballet Prambanan is a Javanese dance-drama, performed without spoken dialogue, that tells the Ramayana beside the temple whose walls carry the same story. Its operator's Indonesian page calls it a performance combining dance and drama "tanpa dialog", without dialogue, and says it has been staged since 1961.[5] The panels on Prambanan's temples depict the Ramayana too, according to the operator's history of the site.[10]

Where you see it depends on the month. The operator's destination page says the open-air stage is used only in the dry months and the closed Trimurti stage at other times.[4] Its ticket page turns that into a dated schedule, and that schedule, as published on 11 October 2026, stops at October 2026.[1]

The story and the show

The operator summarises the story as Rama's journey to rescue his wife Sita, usually called Sinta in Java, who has been abducted by Rahwana, king of Alengka.[4] Its experience page describes the production as the Ramayana adapted into Javanese culture, with more than 200 dancers and musicians and gamelan accompaniment.[6]

The operator also stages a second dance-drama on the same site. The Roro Jonggrang dance-drama tells a Javanese story in a modern dance form and is performed on Fridays at the Trimurti theatre, according to its experience page.[7]

Which stage, which months: the 2026 schedule

Of the operator's pages XTOUR read, the ticket page's table gives the most detailed schedule, and it carries the note that the schedule may change at any time.[1]

Jan 2026 - Dec 2026Roro JonggrangGedung Trimurti (indoor)Fri19:30-20:30

Read against the destination page, the pattern holds: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, outdoors in the dry season and indoors otherwise.[4] The ticket page adds a short outdoor Saturday show in the Amphi theatre in the first months of 2026.[1]

What it does not show is the Ramayana after October 2026. On 11 October 2026 the table listed no Ramayana performance for November 2026 onwards, indoor or outdoor; only the Friday Roro Jonggrang show ran to December.[1] XTOUR does not know the schedule from November 2026 and does not infer it from the previous season.

Where the operator's pages disagree

The operator's pages do not describe the schedule in the same way, and all four below were live on 11 October 2026.

  • The ticket page's header reads "Selasa, Kamis, Jumat, Sabtu, 17.30 - 19.30 WIB", which merges the Friday Roro Jonggrang show and gives a 17.30-19.30 window rather than performance times.[1]
  • The English experience page says performances run "every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday starting at 19.30 WIB", and describes the ballet as performed on an open-air stage, without mentioning the indoor season.[6]
  • The ticket site's home page still advertised Ramayana on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on the outdoor stage and Roro Jonggrang on Friday in the "Amphi Theater/Teater Indoor" for "Mei-Oktober 2025".[2] That card is a year out of date, and it places Roro Jonggrang differently from the schedule table, which puts it in the Trimurti building.[1]
  • The English destination page, the only one to explain the seasonal logic, says the ballet is "usually held" on those three days.[4]

The ticket table is the one tied to a booking, so it is the one to check. Even that page says it can change.[1]

The two stages

The Open Air Stage stands west of Prambanan Temple and uses the temple as its backdrop, according to the operator's venue page, which gives its capacity as 1,200 seats.[8] The Trimurti Indoor Theatre has acoustics, lighting and seating designed for cultural performances, especially dance, and 330 seats, according to its venue page.[9] The operator's experience page gives the address of the performance as Klurak, Tamanmartani, in Kalasan District, Sleman Regency.[6]

Rain, seats and arrival, in the ticket page's words

The ticket page sets out what happens when it rains. If rain falls before the start, an outdoor performance moves to the indoor Gedung Trimurti; if rain falls after the performance has run for 45 minutes or more, it is treated as finished and there is no refund.[1]

Seating differs by stage. On the open-air stage, VIP and Special class seats are numbered and Class I and Class II seats are not; in the Trimurti building every ticket has a numbered seat; in the Amphi theatre none does. The music differs too: the ticket page lists gamelan for the open-air and Trimurti performances and a sound recording for the Amphi show.[1]

The page recommends arriving 30 to 45 minutes before the scheduled start so that entry, including ticket validation, goes smoothly.[1]

Ballet and temple are separate purchases

The ticket site sells the Ramayana Ballet and Candi Prambanan as separate products.[2] The temple ticket's included list names Prambanan, Lumbung, Bubrah, Sewu and the Prambanan Museum, not the performance.[3] What the temple ticket covers is explained in the Prambanan temple compounds guide.

What XTOUR does not know

XTOUR does not know the Ramayana schedule from November 2026, current ticket prices for any class, the length of the performance beyond the times printed in the table, accessibility of either stage, or whether the indoor and outdoor productions differ beyond stage, seating and music. XTOUR does not sell tickets for the performance.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

What happens to an open-air show if it rains?

According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket page, if it rains before the start the outdoor performance moves to the indoor Trimurti building, and if rain falls after the show has run for 45 minutes or more it is treated as finished and there is no refund.

Is the Ramayana Ballet inside the Prambanan temple ticket?

XTOUR has not seen it described that way. According to InJourney Destination Management's ticket site, Candi Prambanan and the Ramayana Ballet Prambanan are separate products with separate pages, and the temple ticket's included list names the temples and the museum, not the performance.
