Yogyakarta as a base for the Kraton, Prambanan, Ratu Boko and Borobudur

Yogyakarta is the usual base for Central Java's royal and temple sites, but only some of them are in the city. This guide sets out where each site is by the official pages, who runs it, and what XTOUR does and does not know about reaching them.

Quick answer

Yogyakarta works as a base for these sites, not as their container. The palace gives the addresses of the Kraton's Kedhaton and Taman Sari in Kraton district, Yogyakarta City. Prambanan, Ratu Boko and Borobudur are run by one state operator, InJourney Destination Management (PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko), whose head office is at Prambanan, Sleman. Official pages disagree on Prambanan's province: the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture and the operator's Candi Sewu article place it in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (the article gives Sleman Regency), while the operator's venue pages give 'Prambanan, Klaten', in Central Java; none places it in Yogyakarta city. The operator describes Ratu Boko as a hilltop site south of Prambanan and places Borobudur in Magelang Regency, Central Java, a different province. XTOUR has no travel-time data between Yogyakarta and any of them.

The short answer

Yogyakarta is a base for the royal and temple sites of this part of Java, not a box that contains them. Two of the sites are in the city by their operator's own addresses. The other three are outside it, and Borobudur is in a different province. XTOUR's reading is that the base question is really two questions: where you want to sleep, and which of these sites you want to see. XTOUR has no routing or travel-time data for any of these journeys, so it does not say how long any of them takes.

In the city: the Kraton and Taman Sari

The palace gives the Kedhaton's address as Jl. Rotowijayan, Panembahan, in Kraton district, Yogyakarta City, and Taman Sari's as Patehan in the same district.[2][1] Both are units the palace runs itself, each with its own ticket reservation and visitor regulations on the palace's tourism site: see Visiting the Kraton of Yogyakarta and Taman Sari.

Outside the city: one operator, three sites

Prambanan, Ratu Boko and Borobudur are run by the same state company, InJourney Destination Management, whose legal name on its pages is PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko (Persero). Its head office address is on the Yogya-Solo road at Prambanan, in Sleman, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.[3]

Prambanan. The operator describes a Hindu complex built in the 9th century as an offering to the Trimurti, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, and divides the main compound into three zones, from the outer yard to the inner court where the three main temples stand.[4] See the Prambanan temple compounds.

Ratu Boko. The operator places it on a hilltop south of Prambanan and says plainly that it "is not a temple, but rather an ancient palace complex", with a main gate, a hall and paseban, pools and caves believed to have been used for meditation.[5] See Ratu Boko.

Borobudur. The operator places it in Magelang Regency, Central Java, and its entry guide gives the address in Borobudur district, Magelang Regency.[6][3] That is outside the Special Region of Yogyakarta altogether. Its tickets, including the combined tickets the operator sells with Prambanan and Ratu Boko, are covered in Borobudur tickets and climbing rules; XTOUR does not read a combined ticket as advice to see two sites on the same day.

Which province is Prambanan in?

The official pages XTOUR read do not agree. The Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, reporting the 2022 designation of the temples as places of worship, writes of "Candi Prambanan di Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta", Prambanan in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, and of Borobudur, Pawon and Mendut in Central Java.[7] The operator's article on Candi Sewu, dated 6 October 2026, gives the address of Sewu and Prambanan, "still in one complex", as Kecamatan Prambanan, Kabupaten Sleman, in the same province.[8] But the operator's venue page for the Shiva Mandala field beside the main temple gives its location as "Prambanan, Klaten", a regency of Central Java.[9] XTOUR has not tested the temples against an administrative boundary and does not choose between them; the Prambanan temple compounds guide sets out every page involved. Either way, none of these pages puts Prambanan in Yogyakarta city, and Borobudur is the one in Magelang.[3]

What XTOUR does not know about getting there

XTOUR has no routing provider and states no travel times, distances by road or same-day combinations between Yogyakarta and any of these sites.

XTOUR also does not know opening hours or prices, which change and which the operators publish themselves. It does not know whether staying near Borobudur rather than in Yogyakarta suits a particular plan; it can only say that Borobudur's operator places the temple in Magelang Regency, outside the city and the province.

For the city itself, see the Yogyakarta destination page, and for the country, Indonesia.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Is there one ticket for Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko?

Not one for all three. According to InJourney Destination Management's Borobudur entry guide, dated 27 July 2026, its 'tiket terusan' for domestic visitors (wisatawan nusantara) pair Borobudur with Prambanan or Borobudur with Ratu Boko. The page does not say whether foreign visitors can buy them. XTOUR publishes no prices.

Is Ratu Boko a temple?

Its operator says not. InJourney Destination Management's Ratu Boko page says it 'is not a temple, but rather an ancient palace complex' believed to have been built in the 8th century.
