Aachen Cathedral

Aachener Dom

Aachen Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia, built around the domed Carolingian octagon of St Mary's Church, with a Gothic choir hall added to the east.

Why go

Aachen Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church whose core, the cathedral chapter's architecture page says, is the Carolingian St Mary's Church: a domed octagon built on the remains of a Roman thermal complex, to which the Gothic choir hall, completed in 1414, was added to the east. The chapter's site describes it as the final resting place of Charlemagne, the coronation church of the Roman-German kings from 936 to 1531, and the church of the Aachen Pilgrimage held every seven years. Its visit page asks visitors to respect the cathedral as a place of worship, says it is not open to visitors during services, and says the choir and the Hochmünster gallery with the imperial throne can be seen only on a guided tour. The Cathedral Treasury is a separate museum with its own visit and is not part of this record.
