Why go

The Chocolate Museum is a privately owned museum of the cultural history and production of cocoa and chocolate at the tip of the Rheinau peninsula in Cologne's Rheinauhafen. Its own pages say the chocolate maker Hans Imhoff opened it on 31 October 1993 in and around the old main customs office, financed without public funding, and that his family has run it in the second generation since 2016. The exhibition follows cocoa from the ancient cultures of the Americas to modern production, with a walk-in tropical house and a glass chocolate factory where production can be watched through viewing windows. The museum recommends booking tickets in advance through its online shop to avoid queuing at the ticket office.
