Why go

Museum Ludwig is a museum of 20th-century and contemporary art in Cologne, close to the cathedral and opposite the central station. Its history page says it was founded in 1976, when Peter and Irene Ludwig signed a donation contract with the City of Cologne giving 350 works of modern art on condition that the city build a museum for them; the building by Peter Busmann and Godfrid Haberer opened in 1986, shared at first with the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, and has housed only Museum Ludwig since the two were separated. Its collection page names American Pop Art, German Expressionism, photography and works by Picasso among its focuses, and traces the collection back to Josef Haubrich's gift to the city in 1946. The museum's FAQ says tickets are sold in its online shop or at the cash desk, and that purchased tickets cannot be exchanged or returned.
