Abbey Library of St. Gall

Stiftsbibliothek St.Gallen

The Abbey Library of St Gall (Stiftsbibliothek St.Gallen) is the library of the former Abbey of St Gall in St. Gallen's Abbey District, with a Baroque hall and a collection of early medieval manuscripts.

Why go

The Abbey Library of St Gall is the library of the former abbey in the Abbey District of St. Gallen. The Abbey District site says the core of its collection is a corpus of early medieval manuscripts from the 8th to the 11th centuries, most of them produced on the site, that it is run today by the Catholic Denomination within the Canton of St Gall as a research library focused on the Middle Ages, and that it was listed with the whole abbey complex as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. The site announces its exhibitions in the Baroque Hall of the Abbey Library, and its combined 'Entire Abbey' ticket covers the Abbey Library, the Vaulted Cellar and the Exhibition Space; it says groups visiting without one of its guides must register at least two weeks in advance. The library's house rules allow photography for private use without flash, tripod or selfie stick and ask that bags larger than A4 be left in the cloakroom or lockers. This record is the library, not the manuscript collection item (Q118671810), the Abbey Archives or the Abbey District.
