Why go
Protection here goes back almost a century: in 1928 20 hectares of forest were declared a nature reserve, a botanical reserve followed in 1935, and in 1946 Ajameti became a strict reserve for the Imeretian oak and zelkova. Today it is a managed reserve of the Agency of Protected Areas, with its administration in Vartsikhe village, and its woodland runs through parts of Ajameti, Vartsikhe and Sviri in Baghdati and Zestaponi municipalities. The agency notes that tourism infrastructure has yet to be developed, so there are no visitor facilities of the kind found at the caves and canyons around Kutaisi. Ajameti suits people who specifically want to see old oak woodland rather than a general day out.
