Almudena Cathedral

Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena

Almudena Cathedral (Santa María la Real de la Almudena) is the Catholic cathedral of Madrid, on Calle Bailén beside the Royal Palace.

Why go

The cathedral's history page says King Alfonso XII laid the first stone in 1883, that the crypt was completed in 1911, and that Pope John Paul II consecrated the cathedral on 15 June 1993; the first Neo-Gothic design by Francisco de Cubas was finished in a classicist style to harmonise with the neighbouring Royal Palace. The cathedral museum offers a guided visit to the museum and the dome. Its crypt page says guided visits to the crypt are on request, must be booked by email and paid in advance, and do not run in July and August. The crypt is a parish with its own address at Calle Mayor 90, a component of the cathedral rather than a separate record.
