Ancient Messene

Αρχαία Μεσσήνη · Μεσσήνη

Ancient Messene is the archaeological site of a Greek city founded in 369 BC, at Mavromati in Messenia, Peloponnese.

Why go

Ancient Messene was founded in 369 BC by the Theban general Epaminondas; Hellenic Heritage, the Ministry of Culture's heritage platform, says the archaeological park covers about one third of the original city and that excavations since 1987 have uncovered most of the public and religious buildings described by Pausanias. The same page names the Odeon, the Asclepieion, the Stadium with its Heroon, the Sanctuary of Zeus, the Gymnasium, the Theatre, the Ecclesiasterion and the Fountain of Arsinoe. Hellenic Heritage lists a ticket for the site and names the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia and the site's guardhouse as contacts; the Ministry's Odysseus page gives the address as Mavromati. This record is the archaeological site, not its separate museum or the modern town of Messini.
