Ara Pacis Museum
Museo dell'Ara Pacis
The Ara Pacis Museum is a civic museum on the Lungotevere in Augusta in central Rome, built to a design by Richard Meier to house and protect the Augustan Ara Pacis.
Why go
This record is the museum building and institution, not the Augustan altar it shelters or the Mausoleum of Augustus beside it. The museum's own pages say the City of Rome replaced the 1938 shelter over the altar because it could not protect the monument, and that the new museum by Richard Meier's studio places the Ara Pacis in a central pavilion lit through large glass walls. The museum is one of Rome's civic museums (Sistema Musei di Roma Capitale). Its ticket page says tickets can be bought online, through the 060608 call centre or at the ticket office in advance, while same-day tickets are sold at the ticket office; individual visitors can book only by buying online in advance, and groups of 11 to 25 people enter only with a booking through 060608. The same page asks visitors always to check the museum's notices page before planning a visit.
