Spanish Steps

Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti · Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti

The Spanish Steps are the 18th-century monumental stairway in central Rome that links Piazza di Spagna with the church of Trinità dei Monti on the slope of the Pincio.

Why go

The Spanish Steps were built between 1723 and 1726 to a design by the Roman architect Francesco De Sanctis, linking the slope of the Pincio, topped by the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti, with Piazza di Spagna below, according to Rome's Sovrintendenza Capitolina. Rome's official tourism site says the travertine stairway has 11 ramps of 12 steps and was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII for the Jubilee of 1725. The Sovrintendenza records a full restoration in 1995 and another from October 2015, after which the steps reopened in September 2016. The church at the top and Piazza di Spagna below are separate places.
