Pantheon · Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres

The Pantheon is an ancient Roman temple in Rome's historic centre, on Piazza della Rotonda, that has been a church, the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres, since the seventh century.

Why go

The Pantheon was rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD on the site of a temple commissioned by Agrippa, and in 609 Pope Boniface IV consecrated it as the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres, according to Rome's official tourism site; the same site says the tombs of Raphael and of Italy's kings Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I are inside. It is still a church: the Chapter of canons of the Basilica of Santa Maria ad Martyres publishes its Mass times on its own site, and Rome's tourism office lists the Pantheon among the sites of the Ministry of Culture's Pantheon and Castel Sant'Angelo museum directorate. The Chapter's visitor-service site says that since 3 July 2023 the Pantheon can be entered only with a paid ticket and that opening times may change because of religious celebrations. This is the Pantheon in Rome, not the Panthéon in Paris.
