Capitoline Museums

Musei Capitolini

The Capitoline Museums are Rome's civic museums of ancient sculpture and art in the palaces on Piazza del Campidoglio, on the Capitoline Hill.

Why go

The Capitoline Museums belong to Roma Capitale's civic museum system, and the museum traces its origin to 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV gave a group of bronze statues to the people of Rome. Rome's official tourism site says the collections are shown in Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo on Piazza del Campidoglio, linked by an underground gallery that leads to the ancient Tabularium overlooking the Roman Forum, and include the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and the Capitoline picture gallery. The museum's tickets page says tickets can be bought in advance online, through the 060608 call centre or at the ticket office, and on the day at the ticket office, and that individual visitors can reserve only by buying online in advance. Piazza del Campidoglio itself is not this record.
