Archaeological Museum of Chania

Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Χανίων

The Archaeological Museum of Chania presents the archaeological finds of the regional unit of Chania, in western Crete, from the first traces of human presence to the 4th century AD, in a building opened in 2022 at 15 Skra Street in the Chalepa quarter of Chania.

Why go

This record is the museum at its current site in Chalepa. The museum's history page says it opened in 1962 in the church of the Venetian Monastery of St Francis in Chania's Old Town, closed there on 13 September 2020 and found its permanent home in Chalepa in 2022, so the Old Town building is not this record's location. The museum's pages, published by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, say three ground-floor galleries present the region from the first traces of human presence to the 4th century AD, including the city-states of Kydonia and Aptera, the statue of Hadrian from the sanctuary of Diktynna and sculptures from the Asklepieion of Lissos, and that an upper gallery shows part of the Konstantinos, Marika and Kyriakos Mitsotakis Collection. Hellenic Heritage's official ticket store lists timed-entry tickets valid for one entry on the selected date and time and says large luggage and food are not permitted.
