Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Ηρακλείου
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is the Ministry of Culture's museum of Cretan archaeology at Xanthoudidou 2 in central Heraklion, with finds from the Neolithic period to Roman times.
Why go
This record is the museum, not the archaeological sites whose finds it holds, such as Knossos, which has its own record. The Ministry of Culture's Odysseus page describes it as a Special Regional Service of the Ministry with artefacts covering over 5,500 years of Cretan prehistory and history, and says its building was designed by Patroklos Karantinos and built between 1937 and 1940; the Municipality of Heraklion's page gives 1933 to 1937 instead. Hellenic Heritage names among the exhibits the faience Snake Goddesses, the Phaistos Disc, the gold ornament from Malia representing two bees and wall paintings from the palace of Knossos. The Odysseus page says tickets are sold at the museum's ticket booth or online and can be used only on the booked day and time slot, and Hellenic Heritage's ticket store says large luggage and food are not permitted.
