Knossos is the archaeological site of the Minoan palace and town on the Kephala hill, south of the city of Heraklion in Crete.

Why go

This record is the archaeological site of Knossos, not the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, a separate record, which according to Hellenic Heritage has a gallery of Minoan wall paintings dominated by those from the palace of Knossos. The Municipality of Heraklion's page says the area was inhabited from the Neolithic period, that the palace was built on the Kephala hill and that its excavator, Arthur Evans, carried out extensive reconstruction, after a first excavation by Minos Kalokairinos in 1878. Hellenic Heritage, the Ministry of Culture and ODAP platform, says the palace was recently inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List together with five other Minoan palaces. Its official ticket store lists Knossos tickets as timed entry, valid for one entry on the selected date and time, and says large luggage and food are not permitted. The Ministry's Odysseus page instead points online buyers to etickets.tap.gr, so the current ticket channel should be checked before booking.
