Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Θεσσαλονίκης

The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is a museum of the archaeology of Macedonia, from prehistory to the end of antiquity, in a listed modernist building designed by Patroklos Karantinos in Thessaloniki.

Why go

The museum's own site says its collections date from the prehistoric era to the end of antiquity and come from excavations across Macedonia since 1912, along with handed-in antiquities. It says the building, designed by Patroklos Karantinos, was begun in 1960 near the International Trade Fair grounds and is a listed monument. Hellenic Heritage names the bronze volute krater of Derveni among the exhibits and describes an outdoor exhibition area with sarcophagi and funerary monuments. The museum's hours-and-tickets page says groups can visit after confirmation by telephone. It is a separate museum from the Museum of Byzantine Culture.
