Museum of Byzantine Culture, Thessaloniki

Μουσείο Βυζαντινού Πολιτισμού

The Museum of Byzantine Culture is a museum of Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture in Thessaloniki, opened in 1994 in a building designed by Kyriakos Krokos.

Why go

The museum's history page says it opened on 11 September 1994 with the return to Thessaloniki of Byzantine antiquities that had been taken to the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens in 1916, and that its building was designed by the architect Kyriakos Krokos. Hellenic Heritage says its eleven halls present Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture through exhibits mainly excavated in Thessaloniki and wider Macedonia. The museum's visit page lists the White Tower alongside the museum with its own ticket; XTOUR keeps the tower as a separate place. Hellenic Heritage's official ticket store sells timed-entry tickets for the museum. It is not the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens.
