Why go

Augusta Raurica is the archaeological site of a Roman colony town on the Rhine, which its operator says is now divided between two cantons and two municipalities: the former upper town lies in Augst in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and the lower town and the later fort, Castrum Rauracense, in Kaiseraugst in the canton of Aargau. The site is run by the canton of Basel-Landschaft, which, under a Roman Treaty of 1975 renewed in 1998, coordinates the archaeological work in both places. The operator's home page presents the open-air site with its protected monuments and an animal park separately from the museum and its Roman house. Its history page says major excavations began at the theatre in 1582 and that the museum opened in 1957. The map point stands for the whole dispersed site; it is not an entrance or the museum.
