Why go

Kunstmuseum Basel is the museum of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, the city's public art collection, which the museum dates to the city's purchase of the Amerbach Cabinet in 1661. It uses three buildings: the Hauptbau on St. Alban-Graben, completed in 1936 to plans by Rudolf Christ and Paul Bonatz; the Neubau by Christ & Gantenbein across the street, opened in 2016 and linked to it by an underground passage; and the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart on St. Alban-Rheinweg, opened in 1980, for contemporary art. The museum's renovation page says the Hauptbau will close for a renovation expected to take four years and to begin in 2029 at the earliest, with exhibitions continuing in the Neubau and the Gegenwart. The map point marks the Hauptbau.
