Rathaus Basel

Basel Town Hall is the Rathaus on the Marktplatz in Basel, built from 1504 and extended around 1900, where the canton of Basel-Stadt's government and Grand Council meet.

Why go

Basel Town Hall is the Rathaus at Marktplatz 9 in Basel, which the canton of Basel-Stadt's own pages call the political centre of the canton. They say the main building with three arcades and the government council chamber was built in 1504 to 1514 after Basel joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501, and that the tower and the broad wing on its left were added in 1899 to 1901. The canton's visitor page (in German, translated here) says the building has limited public access: it can be seen on a guided tour booked through Basel Tourismus, and sittings of the Grand Council are public, with no registration needed for individuals. The same page says the tower room is not open to the public but can be visited on request as part of a special tour.
