Bogor Palace
Istana Bogor
The Bogor Presidential Palace (Istana Kepresidenan Bogor) is an official residence and office of the President of Indonesia in central Bogor, a former Dutch governor-general's residence built from 1745 in grounds of about 29 hectares beside the botanic garden.
Why go
The State Secretariat, which runs the presidential palaces, says Governor-General van Imhoff began a retreat called Buitenzorg here in 1745, that the building was badly damaged by an earthquake on 10 October 1834 and completed under Governor-General Pahud (1856 to 1861), and that it became the official residence of the Dutch governors-general in 1870. Since January 1950 it has served the Indonesian government as a presidential office and residence; the ministry lists events here including the Five-Nation Conference of 1954, the APEC leaders' meeting of 1994 and the signing of the 11 March 1966 order known as Supersemar. The ministry says six pairs of deer were brought into the palace grounds under Governor-General Daendels (1808 to 1811) and that their numbers are still growing; the grounds adjoin the Bogor Botanical Gardens. The ministry's page says the Balai Kirti presidential museum, opened in 2014 in the palace area, is the only part of the palace open to the general public; that museum is a separate subject.
