Cabo Girão

Miradouro do Cabo Girão

Cabo Girão is a high sea cliff on Madeira's south coast in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos; this record is the viewpoint at its top, which has a suspended glass platform.

Why go

Visit Madeira places the viewpoint at 580 metres in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, with a suspended glass platform and views over Câmara de Lobos, Funchal and the small cultivated fajãs at the foot of the cliff. The regional forestry and nature conservation institute, IFCN, says the Cabo Girão Protected Area belongs to Câmara de Lobos and combines a marine natural park with the Cabo Girão Natural Monument and Protected Landscape on land; it lists the Miradouro do Cabo Girão as a geosite and says the viewpoint and new access roads were built in 1953. Visit Madeira says payment for visiting the area is made through the SIMplifica portal. IFCN and the cathedral's parish both say stone from Cabo Girão was used in Funchal Cathedral. This record is the clifftop viewpoint, not the protected area designated over the cliff, and it lies in Câmara de Lobos, not in Funchal.
