Mercado dos Lavradores
Mercado dos Lavradores
Mercado dos Lavradores is a municipal market hall in the centre of Funchal, Madeira, opened in 1940, where stalls sell fruit, vegetables, fish, sweets, crafts and regional products.
Why go
Visit Madeira says the market was inaugurated in 1940 to a design by Edmundo Tavares in the Estado Novo style, and that its façade, main door and fish market are decorated with large tile panels of 1940 from the Battistini factory, painted with regional themes by João Rodrigues. It is one of the two markets on the Câmara Municipal do Funchal's municipal markets site, which says it has 122 spaces, lists regional products, crafts, sweets, fish, fruit and vegetables among the goods of its markets, and posts the themed fairs held there. The building and the working market are one record. Opening days and hours are set by the municipality and the published listings differ, so check the municipal markets site before going.
