Madeira Botanical Garden

Jardim Botânico da Madeira – Eng.º Rui Vieira

The Madeira Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico da Madeira – Eng.º Rui Vieira) is a garden of about 8 hectares on the Quinta do Bom Sucesso estate in Funchal, owned by the Autonomous Region of Madeira and part of its forestry and nature conservation institute, IFCN.

Why go

The visitor page of the Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN) says the garden belongs to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, covers about 8 hectares, 5 of them landscaped, and lies in Funchal's Santa Maria Maior parish between 150 and 300 metres above sea level. Visit Madeira says it was created in 1960 on the Quinta do Bom Sucesso, an estate established by the Reid family in 1881, and that the Natural History Museum and the Herbarium are inside. IFCN says there are two entrances, the main gate to the main house and gardens and one by the Botanical Garden cable car station on the north side, and that a single ticket covers the gardens, the Natural History Museum and temporary exhibitions and, except in special situations, lapses when the visitor leaves. It asks visitors to keep to the paths and out of the flower beds, and says pets other than guide dogs, bicycles and ball games are not allowed. This record is the regional botanical garden, not the Monte Palace garden and not the Botanical Garden cable car.
