Funchal Cable Car
Teleférico do Funchal
The Funchal Cable Car (Teleférico do Funchal) is a gondola lift between the Old Town of Funchal and Monte, operated by Teleféricos da Madeira, S.A.; this record is mapped at its lower station in Funchal.
Why go
The operator's site lists two stations, Funchal-Monte in the city and Monte-Funchal at Largo das Babosas in Monte, and says the line was built from 1999 and inaugurated in 2000 on a route once travelled by train. Visit Madeira says the line starts from the Old Town of Funchal, that its cable is 3,200 metres long, and that tickets can be bought on the operator's website or at either station; the operator says its e-tickets let passengers go straight to boarding. The operator's conditions of use say the time of the last boarding is posted at the stations, that bicycles or animals may be carried at quieter times only with the staff's approval, and that if the return trip cannot run because of bad weather, a power cut or a breakdown, holders of a valid ticket are taken back to their starting station by other means or refunded half the fare. This record is the Funchal to Monte line, not the separate Botanical Garden cable car that IFCN says runs from Largo das Babosas in Monte to the botanical garden.
