Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte (Funchal)
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte is an 18th-century parish church at Monte, in the highlands of Funchal, Madeira, where Emperor Charles I of Austria is buried.
Why go
Visit Madeira describes an 18th-century church with tile panels showing Nossa Senhora do Monte and a set of late 18th-century paintings by Nicolau Ferreira, and says that Charles I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, whose last home was Quinta do Monte, where he died in 1922, rests in the church. The cable car operator's site says he is honoured there with a tomb chapel, a statue and a permanent exhibition. Visit Madeira says the parish's festival of Nossa Senhora do Monte begins with novenas on 5 August and ends with the main celebration on 14 and 15 August. No page of the parish itself was read, so this record states no visiting arrangements. This record is the church, not the Monte wicker sledges or the gardens of Monte.
