Why go

Visit Azores says the museum was founded in 1876 by Carlos Maria Gomes Machado and is housed in the former Santo André Convent, beginning with Azorean natural history collections and later adding sacred art, regional ethnography, painting, tiles, sculpture, gold and silver work and old toys. Ponta Delgada's municipal tourism site says it was created as the Museu Açoriano in the old Liceu, opened to the public in 1880, took its founder's name after 1914, brought its collections together in the Santo André convent after acquiring it in 1930, and opened reworked visitor circuits in the former convent in 2016. The same site lists two other sites of the museum: the Núcleo de Arte Sacra, installed in 2006 in the church of the former Jesuit College, and the Núcleo de Santa Bárbara, opened in 2010. This record is the Santo André site; the other two are separate places. Opening hours and tickets are set by the museum; check its own site before you go.
