Portas da Cidade (Ponta Delgada)

Portas da Cidade

The Portas da Cidade are the three-arched 18th-century city gates of Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, Azores, which stand on Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square.

Why go

Visit Azores says the gates were built in the 18th century next to the old quay and moved to Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square when the seafront avenue named after Prince Henry was built, and that the middle of the three arches carries the royal and the city's coats of arms. Ponta Delgada's municipal tourism site calls the gates the city's emblem and a monument that symbolises the entrance to the city, and places the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião beside them. This record is the gate monument, not the square around it.
