Castel Nuovo, also called the Maschio Angioino, is a castle by Piazza Municipio in Naples, run by the Comune di Napoli and home to the city's Museo Civico.
Why go
Castel Nuovo, known as the Maschio Angioino, is a castle in Naples; the Comune di Napoli's page says Alfonso I of Aragon made it his royal residence, began rebuilding it and raised the triumphal arch on its exterior, and that under the Aragonese the medieval castle-palace became a modern fortress, with a trapezoidal plan and five cylindrical towers. The castle is now used for cultural purposes and houses the city's Museo Civico; the Comune's page lists the museum's first floor and picture gallery, the monumental courtyard, the Sala dei Baroni, the archaeological route in the former armoury and the Palatine Chapel among the spaces on the visit. The same page says some of those spaces may not be open when they are let under the city council's rules or used for institutional purposes, and that access to the castle is suspended when its maximum capacity is reached. It says tickets are sold at the ticket office, by card, and online through the Comune's ticketing site. This record is the castle and its civic museum, not Castel dell'Ovo on the waterfront.
