Why go

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Lugano. The diocese's history page says Pope Leo XIII's bull 'Ad universam' of 7 September 1888 raised the parish and collegiate church of San Lorenzo to a cathedral, and the city's history page says the first sure trace of a community at Lugano is a document of 875 that names 'Sancti Laurenti in Luano'. Lugano Region, the regional tourism board, says the church is recorded as a parish in 818 and as a collegiate church in 1078, that most of its masonry is Romanesque, and that its façade was built between 1500 and 1517; inside it describes frescoes, Baroque decoration, the Chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie and a baptismal font dated 1430. The diocese's history page records bishops' ordinations held in the cathedral; the diocese publishes no visiting rules, so none are stated here.
