Why go

The Chapel Bridge is a covered wooden footbridge over the Reuss in Lucerne. Lucerne Tourism's page says it links the Lucerne Theatre on the south bank with St. Peter's Chapel on the Rathausquai, passing the Water Tower, and that it once served as part of the town's fortifications as well as a crossing. The same page says a major part of the bridge burned on the night of 18 August 1993, that only the two bridgeheads and the Water Tower were saved, and that the rebuilt bridge reopened on 14 April 1994. It describes the cycle of painted panels conceived by the town chronicler Renward Cysat, who finalised his plan in 1611, and says 147 of the original 158 panels still existed before the fire, 110 of which were directly affected by it. This record is the bridge; the Water Tower beside it is a separate structure with its own Wikidata item (Q2551817).
