Colosseum
Colosseo
The Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheatre, is the ancient Roman amphitheatre in central Rome, in the area between the Palatine, Esquiline and Caelian hills.
Why go
The Colosseum is the Flavian Amphitheatre, begun under the emperor Vespasian in 70 AD and completed under his son Titus in 80 AD, according to Rome's official tourism site. The same site says it is part of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, together with the Roman Forum and the Palatine; this record is the amphitheatre itself, and XTOUR keeps the Forum and the Palatine as separate places. Rome's tourism office says that in some periods of the year visitors can go down into the underground areas, and it points to the park's own ticketing site, ticketing.colosseo.it, for online purchase. The park's website could not be opened for this record, so its entry and booking rules are not given here: check them with the park before you go.
