Why go

The Convent of Christ in Tomar is, in the words of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, a complex that includes the Templar Castle of Tomar and the Renaissance convent of the Order of Christ; its page says the castle emerged in 1160 with the Templars' foundation of Tomar and became the seat of the Order of Christ after the Templars were extinguished in 1312. The page describes the Charola, the round church inspired by Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre, the Manueline nave by Diogo de Arruda and João de Castilho, and the Chapter Window. The monument is on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983 and is managed by Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, whose page lists an online ticket office and, when read on 9 October 2026, said conservation works under the PRR (which the page calls the Recovery and Rehabilitation Program) restrict access to several areas, including the Washing Cloister and parts of the Main Cloister. Its description of the complex also takes in the Seven Hills Forest, a hermitage and the Pegões Aqueduct; this record's map point is on the convent buildings.
