Why go

The Synagogue of Tomar is the medieval synagogue building at Rua Dr. Joaquim Jacinto 73 in Tomar. The Centre of Portugal tourism board's page says it was built in the mid-15th century, closed in 1496 when King Manuel I decreed the expulsion of the Jews, and afterwards used as a prison, referred to as a hermitage, and used as a hayloft, granary and store. The same page says it was classified a National Monument in 1921, bought and restored by Samuel Schwarz from 1923, and donated by him to the Portuguese state in 1939 to house the Abraão Zacuto Luso-Hebraic Museum, whose collection includes tombstones from various parts of Portugal. This record is the historic synagogue building; it makes no claim that worship takes place there today, and it does not state visiting arrangements.
