Pegões Aqueduct

Aqueduto dos Pegões · Aqueduto do Convento de Cristo

The Pegões Aqueduct is the aqueduct built to supply the Convent of Christ in Tomar, whose arched stretch crosses the Pegões valley in Tomar municipality.

Why go

The Pegões Aqueduct (Aqueduto do Convento de Cristo, also Aqueduto dos Pegões) carried water to the Convent of Christ in Tomar. The Centre of Portugal tourism board says it was designed at the end of the 16th century, under King Filipe II of Spain, by the Italian architect and engineer Filipe Terzi, was completed in 1619, runs about 7 km with 180 arches, and singles out its stretch over the Pegões valley. Museus e Monumentos de Portugal counts the aqueduct as part of the Convent of Christ complex and says its arcade altered the convent's south façade. This record is the aqueduct, mapped at its arched stretch across the Pegões valley; the convent is a separate record. No page read states visitor access arrangements for the aqueduct.
