Dachstein Giant Ice Cave

Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle

The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave is a show cave in the Dachstein massif above Obertraun in Upper Austria, visited on guided tours run by the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car company.

Why go

The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave is a show cave in the Dachstein massif above Obertraun, reached from the Schönbergalm middle station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car, whose operator runs the tours. The operator's cave page says guides lead visitors through ice-free passages and a stalactite hall to St. Arthur's Dome, where cave-bear bones with signs of human processing were found, then up to the higher level with its ice formations, including the Parsifal Dome, the Big Ice Mountain and the Big Ice Chapel. It says visitors must register for a guided tour at the cave ticket counter at the Schönbergalm middle station, where they receive a tour number and time, and that fixed tour times are possible only by booking a special guided tour. Tours are given in German and English, according to the same page. The cave lies in Obertraun, not in Hallstatt, and is not the nearby Mammoth Cave.
