Why go

Museum Hallstatt is the village museum on Seestraße in Hallstatt, run by the Museal-Verein Hallstatt. Its own pages say it reopened in 2002 after an extensive renovation and presents the Hallstatt culture, the archaeological period of about 800 to 450 BC named after finds from the salt mine and the burial ground above the village. The museum describes 26 themed sections that run from the Neolithic through prehistoric salt mining to the Celts and Romans, the Middle Ages and the modern era, with the researchers of the Hallstatt culture, the finds from the burial ground, the Protestant community and Hallstatt's development as a tourist destination and World Heritage site. It traces its own history to Friedrich Simony in 1844 and the founding of the Musealverein in 1884.
