Hallstatt Salt Mine

Salzbergwerk Hallstatt

The Hallstatt Salt Mine is a salt mine in the high valley above Hallstatt in Upper Austria, shown to visitors on guided tours run by Salzwelten.

Why go

The Hallstatt Salt Mine lies in the Salzberg high valley above Hallstatt and is shown on guided tours by Salzwelten, which says people were living in the high valley and mining salt as early as 5,000 BC. Salzwelten's visit page names the valley station of the Hallstatt funicular as the meeting point and asks visitors to arrive there ahead of the start of their tour; the funicular climbs to the high valley, a path leads to the Knappenhaus, where the guided tour begins, and visitors leave the mountain on the mine train. Inside, the operator describes miners' slides, an underground salt lake and a Bronze Age Cinema whose centrepiece is a prehistoric wooden staircase that it says miners used about 2,800 years ago. The same page says the salt mine is suitable for children aged 4 and over. This record is the mine; the funicular and the Skywalk platform at its upper station are not part of it.
