Dashtadem Fortress

A walled stronghold on the southern edge of Dashtadem village, where an octagonal ring of 19th-century bastions encloses an older keep bearing an Arabic inscription of 1174 in Kufic script.

Why go
The way in is the first thing to notice: the arched main gate makes anyone entering turn at a right angle, a layout meant to stop horsemen charging through, and lion reliefs are set in the wall above it. Inside the outer ring stand a keep of semi-circular towers with cisterns and tunnels beneath, and a small chapel of St Sargis that has been entirely rebuilt. Its beginnings go back to the 9th–10th centuries, and reconstruction is under way, so expect fresh masonry beside the old. Talin Cathedral and Mastara's church lie in the same Talin community and make an easy combination.
