Archaeological Site of Delphi

Αρχαιολογικός χώρος Δελφών · Δελφοί

The Archaeological Site of Delphi holds the ancient sanctuaries of Apollo and Athena Pronaia below Mount Parnassus, near the present-day village of Delphi in Phocis, Central Greece.

Why go

Delphi was the sanctuary of Apollo's oracle, where, Hellenic Heritage says, the priestess Pythia delivered oracles that the priests interpreted, until a decree of Theodosius I ended them in 394 AD. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Phocis describes the site as two sanctuaries divided by the modern road: the Sanctuary of Apollo to the north, with the Sacred Way leading to the Temple of Apollo and the theatre above it, and the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia to the south, with the Tholos, the temples of Athena and the gymnasium beside it; the stadium is at the highest point. Hellenic Heritage's ticket covers the archaeological site and the Archaeological Museum of Delphi together, and the Ministry of Culture's site page says tickets are sold at on-site ticket offices and online. The same Ministry page lists parts of the site as closed, so check it before you go. This record is the archaeological site, not the modern village or the museum.
