Doge's Palace

Palazzo Ducale

The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) is the former residence of the Doge and seat of the Venetian Republic's government in the San Marco district of Venice, now a civic museum.

Why go

The Doge's Palace is the Gothic palace that housed the Doge, the Venetian Republic's highest magistrate, and its government; today it is a museum run by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE). The museum's history page says the Italian State owns the building, that in 1923 the State appointed the City Council to manage it as a public museum, and that it joined the Civic Museums of Venice network in 1996. Its visitor information page names the Porta del Frumento on Piazzetta San Marco as the public entrance, and says the St Mark's Square Museums ticket also covers the Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Rooms of the Marciana National Library. The same page describes the Secret Itineraries and the Doge's Hidden Treasures as guided tours by reservation only.
