Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle is a ruined castle on the coastal cliffs of north County Antrim, Northern Ireland, near Bushmills, cared for by the Department for Communities as a State Care Monument.

Why go

Dunluce Castle is a ruin on the cliffs of north County Antrim; the Department for Communities, which holds it as a State Care Monument, says it was first built by the MacQuillan family around 1500, with the earliest written record in 1513, and was seized by the MacDonnells in the 1550s. The department says that in the 17th century Dunluce was the seat of the earls of Antrim, that a small town was established there in 1608, and that visitors can see the excavated streets and merchants' houses of the abandoned Dunluce Town. Its State Care Monuments page says Dunluce is staffed throughout the year with dedicated visitor facilities. The department's site page says it is open during opening hours, points to the Discover Northern Ireland website for those hours, and says charges may apply. This record is the castle, not Dunluce village or the wider coast.
