Einstein House

Einsteinhaus

The Einstein House is the flat at Kramgasse 49 in Bern's old town that Albert Einstein rented from 1903 to 1905, now a small museum run by the Albert Einstein Society.

Why go

The Einstein House is the second-floor flat at Kramgasse 49 in the old town of Bern that Albert Einstein rented from 1903 to 1905, open to the public as a museum. The Albert Einstein Society, which runs it, says the house opened on 14 March 1979, the centenary of Einstein's birth; the flat is furnished in the style of the period to show how Einstein lived there with Mileva and their son Hans Albert, and the third floor presents his biography and work, with a video. The society's pages place his 1905 papers on light quanta, Brownian motion, special relativity and mass-energy equivalence in these Bern years, while he worked at the Federal Patent Office. The house's site carries an online booking link and asks groups to book through it. It is not the Einstein Museum inside the Bern History Museum.
