Zytglogge

Zytglogge · Zeitglockenturm

The Zytglogge is the medieval gate tower in Bern's old town that became the town's clock tower, with an astronomical dial and a figure play.

Why go

The Zytglogge is the clock tower in the old town of Bern. In a 2018 speech marking the end of its restoration, the city's mayor described it as built in 1218 as a defensive tower and gate to the town, later used as a prison, and rebuilt after the town fire of 1405 as a clock tower whose striking clock gave the time for the whole town. The City of Bern's media release of the same day says the astronomical dial, the Astrolabium, dates from the early 15th century, and names the figure play of Chronos, the cockerel, the lion and the bears' round dance. The city lists the Zeitglockenturm among the attractions on its visitor pages. XTOUR has not read a page on visiting the inside of the tower, so no tour or booking information is given.
