Eisriesenwelt
Eisriesenwelt
The Eisriesenwelt is a show ice cave in the mountains above Werfen in the state of Salzburg, visited on guided cave tours run by Eisriesenwelt GmbH.
Why go
This record is the ice cave itself, in the municipality of Werfen; the cable car that climbs towards it, the visitor centre and the restaurants are not separate records, and Salzburg is only a travel base for it. Its operator, Eisriesenwelt GmbH, lists a cash desk at the visitor centre, a cable car up to the cave and the cave tour, and says there is deliberately no electricity in the cave: visitors carry recreated historic lamps and the guides light the way with magnesium. The operator's FAQ says online tickets book a 30-minute time slot in which access is activated on arrival at the visitor centre, and that a ticket can be changed at the cash desk only if spaces are free at the desired time. For groups of 20 or more, the operator says reservation is essential because of timed access.
