Golden Roof

Goldenes Dachl

The Golden Roof is a late-Gothic ornamental oriel roofed with gilded copper shingles on the south front of the Neuhof in Innsbruck's old town, with the City of Innsbruck's Museum Goldenes Dachl in the building.

Why go

The City of Innsbruck says Emperor Maximilian I had the Golden Roof built between 1497 and 1500: a late-Gothic ornamental oriel covered with 2,657 gilded copper shingles on the south front of the government building known as the Neuhof. It names Nikolaus Türing the Elder as its builder and the maker of its reliefs, and attributes the frescoes to Jörg Kölderer, Maximilian's court painter. The city runs the Museum Goldenes Dachl in the building at Herzog-Friedrich-Straße 15, which the city's page says presents Maximilian I and the turn from the Middle Ages to the modern era and offers a view from the oriel over the old town. This record is the oriel with its building and museum, not the street it overlooks. The city's page lists closing days and changing seasonal hours, so check it before a visit (German page, translated here).
