Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art

Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum

The Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum (Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art) in Innsbruck shows folk culture from Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino, from costumes and nativity scenes to historic wood-panelled parlours, and adjoins the Court Church.

Why go

The Tyrolean State Museums run the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum at Universitätsstraße 2 in Innsbruck; their English pages call it the Museum of Tyrolean Regional Heritage. They say its collection comes from the European region of Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino, with sections on lavish feasts ('Das pralle Jahr') and precarious life, on folk costume, on the cultural history of the Christmas nativity scene since the 18th century, and a collection of historic wood-panelled parlours. The museum adjoins the Court Church, which is entered through it, and while the Ferdinandeum is rebuilt the Ferdinandeum's library is housed here. The museum is housed in the Neues Stift, a building that the Burghauptmannschaft Österreich lists among its properties with the museum as its user. This record is the museum, not the Court Church.
