Why go

Designed by Anthemios of Tralles and Isidoros of Miletus in 532–537, Hagia Sophia is named by UNESCO among the unique architectural masterpieces justifying criterion (i) of the Historic Areas of Istanbul World Heritage property (it is part of that property, not inscribed as a World Heritage Site in its own right). Since 15 January 2024 the building's worship and visitor functions have been physically separated: worshippers use the ground-floor harim, while foreign cultural visitors enter through a tunnel and ramp under the Bayezid II minaret on the south façade, buy tickets at an office positioned opposite the Fountain of Ahmed III, and follow a route through the upper gallery — passing the so-called Heaven-Hell gate and viewing the harim, Ottoman-period additions and Byzantine mosaics from above — before exiting by a ramp on the north-east side. Information is available in 23 languages through a QR-code headphone system designed not to disturb worship. The visiting area is ticketed and operated day to day by DEM Museums under the authority of the General Directorate of Foundations (Vakıflar), which announced the current regime through its Istanbul 1st Region office. A major, multi-year restoration has been under way since 2026, most recently focused on strengthening the building's eastern semi-dome with a protective steel platform; the Ministry and DEM both describe visits and worship continuing throughout, with routes adjusted temporarily as work moves between sections. This record covers the historic mosque building and its ticketed gallery route only — it is a different building, address and ticket from the separate Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum in the Defter-i Hakani building on At Meydanı Sokak, even though a combined ticket covering both is also sold. It is also unrelated to three Wikidata homonyms checked during this audit: Little Hagia Sophia / Küçük Ayasofya Camii (Fatih, ~930 m away), Hagia Sophia İznik (Bursa province) and Hagia Sophia Trabzon — a live geocoding test for "Ayasofya Camii, Fatih, İstanbul" returned Küçük Ayasofya Camii as its first result, not this building.

Getting there

Two separate access regimes in one building, effective 15 January 2024: a worship entrance for the ground-floor harim, and a ticketed cultural-visitor route entering via a tunnel and ramp under the Bayezid II minaret on the south façade, with the ticket office positioned opposite the Fountain of Ahmed III (near Topkapı's Imperial Gate) — not the German Fountain in the Hippodrome, which is a tour meeting point only, not the entrance. Visitors exit by a ramp on the north-east side. Tickets are sold both on site and through DEM Museums' own online booking; as of today DEM's online widget offers a combined mosque-and-museum ticket, and the operator's own visitor-rules page says nothing about a mosque-only price, so travellers should confirm current ticket options before visiting. A ticket to the History and Experience Museum on its own does not admit to this mosque, and vice versa, unless a combined ticket is purchased.

Accessibility

The operator's visitor rules (DEM Museums, read today) state that children under 8 are admitted with a parent, who is responsible for the child following mosque rules while inside — there is no published minimum age below which entry is refused. The same rules note that entry may be limited or paused for security or during the mosque's prayer programme, and that dress-code compliance is mandatory at the entrance. Neither DEM nor the Ministry publishes a stroller policy or a description of a step-free route along the entry/exit ramps; OpenStreetMap carries a volunteer wheelchair=yes tag on the building, which is not official confirmation of a continuous accessible route. Do not transfer the neighbouring Blue Mosque's stroller ban to this building — no equivalent rule is published here.
